Some might look at these rogue servers as a free ride and they are not wrong. We have so many MMO games to choose from, but we keep coming back to the same ones. We have expansions, but we crave Vanilla content. might have to reinstall now.Pleasing the MMO crowd is a Sisyphean task. I recently played Tree of Savior, which was fun and nostalgic, but for me nothing comes anywhere close to the feeling that RO gave me back then. I dunno if it was the extensive (and for me unmatched) class system, the stat and skill customisation that allowed for quirky builds (my best character was my Battle Archbishop), the funky hats, the Miniboss and MvP hunting for cards and rare items, or just the general atmosphere of the game itself (visiting pre-update Payon and Marroc, wandering through the Merchant-lined streets of Prontera, dungeon crawling through Glast Heim, Payon Caves, etc.), and sure there were some less glamourous parts to it like the long grind, the rubbish drop rates on official servers and the horde of bots going around (to be fair, these were common with many Korean MMOs of the day) but something about it for me was special. ![]() Though it was technically the second MMO I ever played (the first was a two-week trial stint on Legend of Mir which I didn't like too much), Ragnarok Online holds a special place in my heart. I went through a phase where I wanted to try everything, definitely gave a few of the ones mentioned here a go (at some point I got very into Gunbound, Flyff and Atlantica with my mates, as well as Aion and TERA on my own), alongside some of the big Western (read: WoW) styled MMOs (SWTOR, Guild Wars 2, FF14). Man, some of the names thrown around here are nostalgic. I felt like a Ronin Warriors action figure in that red dragon armor, and I wanted to keep the costume! That day was an experience I'll never forget! I went home with the equivalent of 400 dollars for three hours' work to boot! I never did play the game though. It felt cool swinging it up on stage, and I loved that the blade of the sword was red. It wasn't too heavy, but it certainly had some heft to it. The sword that accompanied the armor was massive, and was about as large as Cloud's Buster Sword would look in proportion to him. The cape was quite long, so attendants had to carry my cape train behind me when we were walking longer distances as a group in crowds to do photo shoots with fans. They had to use a razor knife to cut a slit in the back of the dragon's head helmet so that it would fit on my head. The dragon feet were long like swimming flippers, so I had to step high and carefully (I actually almost tripped when on stage in front of 3,000 people!). They fitted me for a red dragon armor costume a few weeks before the event, but I never tried on the armor until just hours before. I modeled for this game at the COEX convention center in Seoul for the game's debut event in summer of 2003. Ok, so some here likely won't believe me, but I've got a fairly insane story about MU Online. MU Online! Well there's a blast from the distant past! ![]()
